Becoming a donor: yes or no? Since the introduction of the Organ Donation
Act, all Dutch residents from the age of 12 have been able to register
their answer to this question at the central Donor Register. Organ donation
and transplantation is a lifesaving therapy, by which 60 to 70 patients
receive a new kidney at the azM annually.
The azM and Maastricht University feel it is part of their societal
entrepreneurship to help resolve the issue of transplantation together. The
azM provides top referral medical care to resolve a major medical problem
therapeutically, and Maastricht University carries out scientific research
to be able to approach the population about this subject as optimally as
possible through behavioural change. The Maastricht Association of Kidney
Patients (Nierpatiƫnten Vereniging Maastricht) also works towards reducing
or resolving the medical and social problems of its target group.
