Background information

During a large part of the 20th century, the hospital served as a regional health care center. In 1974 the first medical students came to Maastricht and in 1986 the center became the University Hospital azM. A new building was erected in 1991 within a five minute driving distance from the historical center of Maastricht.

History
The hospital is immediately connected to the Faculty of Health, Medicine and Life Sciences (FHML) of Maastricht University. The University Hospital azM has a unique position in Western Europe, at the crossroads of The Netherlands, Germany and Belgium. The University Hospital azM has easy access to these three countries and practices European cooperation on a daily basis. 
The azM aims to take full advantage of its strategic location to further strengthen its unique position in Western Europe. It strives for a leading position among health care institutions in Western Europe.

Top level expertise
An illustrative example of innovation and cooperation in research is the new department for vascular surgery at the University Hospital Aachen  (offical opening in October 2005). Director of this department is Michael Jacobs, Professor and Director of the Cardiovascular Center Maastricht. The European Vascular Center Aachen-Maastricht is an international center for aortic diseases. It performs the Thoraco Abdominal Aorta Aneurysma (TAAA), a special vascular operation that requires top level expertise and dedication.
